Geography KS1

The purpose of Geography is to develop the children’s understanding of the natural environment and that created by human beings, and the relationship between the two. Geography allows the pupil to appreciate the assortment of features which make up the physical environment and it shows them how human beings have used the environment with both positive and negative consequences. It has an important role to play in the children's social and ethical development, as they learn about the world in which they live and the wider whole.

National Curriculum Geography at both Key Stages delivers opportunities to discover and appreciate their own locality and to extend their understanding to the wider world. As well as developing greater contextual knowledge of the world and there is focus on using and applying geographical skills at a competent level. Geography enables learners to probe and to put forward potential solutions to certain human needs and world-wide problems.

At Key Stage 1, Pupils should develop knowledge about the world, the United Kingdom and their locality. They should understand basic subject-specific vocabulary relating to human and physical geography and begin to use geographical skills, including first-hand observation, to enhance their locational awareness.

In 2017, Riverbridge Primary School enrolled in a Global Learning Programme. This programme aims to promote the learning of Geography further, alongside other curriculum subjects. The programme aims to embed global learning into the curriculum, promoting values and expanding their global awareness.
